Finally, the weather’s starting to get nice and warming up. Snow’s melting, sun is shining, and the sky is blue, blue, blue. With that in mind, escaped from the house to get a little exercise, and took the camera with just in case. Good thing I did as this caught my eye while mid-stroll. Since it was midday the light was harsh, but this scene put that to good use. Two edits from slightly different points of view.

Phipps Conservatory, Pittsburgh

Due to the beautiful weather today, packed the wife and Ape up and went to the Phipps Conservatory in downtown Pittsburgh. It’s the first time we’ve ever been there and I have to say, it’s a wonderful attraction and worth the time to go and visit. Of course, I took a camera with to document the visit and naturally got quite a few flower shots. Yeah, they’re totally cliche and what not, but they’re still fun to shoot and the flowers are beautiful, cliche or not, so I indulged. Since it’s always best to indulge with friends, here’s my faves from the day. If you ever get a chance to go, definitely it’s worth the effort.

Had to shoot a doll tonight I’m putting up for sale on eBay. Usually, I just take a well-lit snap and do nothing special, but tonight I thought I’d light it like a fashion shoot just for fun. I basically did a high-key white background ala Zack Arias’ tutorial, but on a much scaled down level. Results came out pretty good – got some clean shots for eBay, plus an evil shot for myself. We like evil here.

Spent some time at the local fun center today. Thought these skates would make some interesting photos due to the fairly graphic way they’re lined up in their storage racks. Usually, the place is crawling with people and shots like these never present themselves, but today it was dead, so I had free reign.

Went with the family out to Mill Creek Sate Park in Youngstown, OH yesterday to kill some time and get some fresh air. Beautiful day, but the light wasn’t so good for pics. Just the same though, took some snaps w/ the E-420 as the scenery was still quite pretty. Anyway, here’s some of my favorites out of the photos I took.

Was out with the family today at the local mall. The weather here has been terrible, so in order to get the Ape some much needed playtime, we took him there to play in their kiddie kingdom. Took the D3 to try and get some action shots like usual, but there were so few kids he mostly just ran around and nothing really interesting came of it other than just some snaps for the scrapbook. This caught my eye though, so it wasn’t a total blowout after all.

Ever run across an object that just screamed to have its picture taken?

Went with the wife and Ape to the new Market District store this past Saturday in Pittsburgh. We were coming back from a meeting for her church group and wanted to get something to eat. Being that we wanted to check it out ever since they finished it a few months back, it was a perfect opportunity to get some grub and scope out the new store. Without a doubt, it’s the biggest grocery store I’ve ever been in, and I’ve been in some biggies. Anyway, while we were there I found this awesome ice cream scoop (by Zak!Designs). I say awesome because the design and construction of it just begged for it to be shot, and it was dirt cheap too, as scoops go. Seeing that we needed a scoop anyway I picked it up and finally got around to shooting it tonight.

The setup was a piece of black foam-core on the floor with the scoop on it. Lighting was dirt simple and pretty ghetto actually – one SB-900 & Pocket Wizard w/ diffusion dome on camera right, bounced off a white storage bin lid leaned up against the sofa. At one point , I added a SB-600 w/ bounce reflector on camera left for some minor fill, but only the second pic below uses it as I liked the results from the single light better. The results speak for themselves I think, and came out great considering it only took a few minutes to setup.
